A Szitakötő

Zala-style dödölle, cheese toasties and occasional music in Keszthely's Halászcsárda courtyard. Szita Gábor and Soós István's more informal kitchen, right beside the cycle path.

A different pace beside the csárda

A Szitakötő occupies a wooden building in the courtyard of Keszthely’s Halászcsárda, very close to the cycle path. An important distinction: this is not traditional csárda dining in a smaller package. The experience centres on a short stop, sitting outdoors and a few distinctive dishes. It can be a refreshment stop during a ride or a longer courtyard break on an unhurried day.

Why Szitakötő?

The name of the venue, launched in April 2025, also refers to Szita Gábor. Alongside Halászcsárda’s more established traditions, he wanted a freer space and entrusted the kitchen to Soós István. The 2025 introduction highlighted three regular pillars: dödölle potato dumplings, toasted sandwiches and soft-serve ice cream. Weekend specials included porchetta, quesadillas and meatball ciabatta; these are examples of experimentation, not guaranteed current dishes.

The local dish is not just a side

Dödölle is a substantial meal in its own right here. The earlier report presented it with sour cream and bacon, while the submitted photograph clearly shows its browned surface and onion-and-herb finish. Confirm the topping when ordering: a potato base does not mean the finished portion is meat-free.

The images show two different sides. By day, you can stop at the counter still wearing your cycling helmet; in the evening, string lights, a DJ booth and a saxophone create a very different occasion. Music is tied to events, however: the July 2026 SoDown Picnic was a separately announced event, not a description of daily operation.

How should you fit it into your day?

For a short break, think in terms of one main choice: dödölle or a toasted sandwich. If there are several of you and you are curious about the weekend special too, check the board first, then divide the order. For a music evening, however, do not allow only the time needed for a quick cycling stop. Both occasions happen in the same place but require different space in your schedule.

Pan-fried Zala-style dödölle

This provides the clearest local connection. Do not plan on it as a side dish: with toppings, it can be a full, filling meal.

Local tip

Check the weekend board first

Do not automatically order everything. Ask first whether there is a daily special alongside the staples; if so, a group can choose one special and one classic.

The BalatonEats meal plan

How to put your meal together

  1. 01
    Dödölle or a toasted sandwich

Make one your main order on a first visit. Sharing as a pair lets you try both directions.

  2. 02
The day's special, if you still have room

Do not order changing weekend dishes based on an old post. Let the board and your appetite decide.

  3. 03
    A sweet finish or refreshment

Soft-serve ice cream can provide a summer finish; in cooler weather, ask about the current dessert. Choose your drink accordingly if you will continue cycling.

Good to know before you go

  • Occasional DJ and jazz events are not a daily service.
  • Weekend specials change; earlier porchetta or quesadillas are not a permanent promise.
  • Dödölle toppings may contain meat and dairy.
