Pajti Keszthely: the little café that became a local favourite

In central Keszthely, right beside the market, there is a place where ordering Eggs Benedict with a cappuccino in the morning feels just as natural as choosing pad thai for lunch or a substantial bowl or sushi in the evening. This is Pajti, whose greatest strength may be that it refuses to squeeze itself into a single restaurant category. It began as a friendly café and has grown into an all-day bistro with a colourful menu.

Located at 8360 Keszthely, Bem József utca 1., the venue does not compete on views of Lake Balaton. Instead, it attracts guests with its proximity to the market, good coffee, a variety of international dishes and a relaxed, youthful atmosphere. It can be a particularly good stop for groups wanting meat, fish, vegetarian and vegan options at the same table.

The story of Horváth Laura and Vass Ákos: they met in Pécs and built their business in Keszthely

Pajti’s founders, Horváth Laura and Vass Ákos, both come from Keszthely, yet they met not in their hometown but during their university years in Pécs. They later returned and opened a venue together. Pajti’s own website dates its opening to December 2019; an older on-site report recalled a 2020 opening, so we use the owners’ account for the precise date.

The original idea was not built around today’s extensive menu. They wanted a café where people would enjoy sitting down for exceptionally good coffee and something light to eat. Its popularity soon outgrew those initial plans, however. The breakfast selection expanded, followed by bagels, wraps, more substantial lunches, Asian flavours and sushi.

This ongoing evolution remains important to understanding the place. Pajti is not preserving a rigid, unchanging concept; instead, it pays attention to what its customers are interested in and expands its range accordingly. According to Street Kitchen’s 2025 report, sushi proved so popular that what was originally intended as an evening dish became available during the day too. The current website says sushi is prepared from 11:30, except on Mondays.

Beside Keszthely’s market: what makes Pajti’s atmosphere different

Pajti’s location suits its personality perfectly. It stands beside the market in Keszthely’s historic centre, a few minutes’ walk from the Fő tér area. The neighbourhood is lively on weekdays too: some people come for coffee before shopping, others pop in for a light lunch during the working day, and many visit the town specifically for the restaurant.

Brick, wood, understated industrial details and a homely café rhythm come together in the dining space. In good weather, you can sit outside on the terrace. We Love Balaton’s photographs and on-site articles capture this easy-going urban atmosphere beautifully: rather than formal restaurant etiquette, expect a sociable setting that welcomes all kinds of groups.

If you are looking for a sunset right on the lakeshore, another location will suit you better. Pajti’s value lies not in a postcard view of Balaton but in becoming an everyday meeting place that works for local people too.

Coffee is no supporting act

Many different dishes now appear under the Pajti name, but its café roots remain. The team prepares its own blend on a professional La Marzocco machine. According to an earlier on-site Street Kitchen report, the blend was developed by Pécs-based roaster Cracker Jack; we do not automatically treat that supplier relationship as confirmed for 2026.

Alongside classic espresso drinks, matcha drinks and seasonal coffee specialities also appear. Earlier reports mention kapucíner, Maci(s) coffee and various iced coffees. Artisan cordials, fruit juices and more unusual soft drinks also feature, so there is a reason to drop in even if you do not drink coffee.

Breakfast at Pajti: Eggs Benedict, avocado and French toast

Breakfast may be the best introduction to Pajti. The official menu lists Hungarian and English breakfasts, avocado toast, savoury eggy bread with avocado, steak toast and several versions of Eggs Benedict. A substantial proportion of the breakfast dishes can be ordered until 11:00.

The Eggs Benedict comes with soft poached eggs, creamy hollandaise and a gluten-free bun, with various toppings to choose from. We would recommend it to guests who like to take their time over a classic brunch dish. Rich hollandaise, creamy egg yolk and the contrast of fresh salad are a reliably successful combination.

Several sources single out the French toast among the sweet breakfasts. The author of an earlier Street Kitchen tasting called it one of the day’s highlights, while a 2025 guest review also praised its texture highly. Today’s menu offers both a separate Morning French Toast and a French Toast dessert, at different prices. If you want to start the day with just coffee and something sweet, this is particularly worth a look.

Asia in central Keszthely: curry, pad thai and ramen

The arrival of Asian cooking is the most exciting chapter in Pajti’s evolution. Pad thai, vegan pad thai, curry soup, ramen, tom yum and sweet-and-spicy Thai dishes appear on the current online menu. That is an unusually wide selection for somewhere that began as a café.

Pad thai and curry soup are favourites with many guests, while the variety of soups makes Pajti appealing in colder weather too. The official curry description lists a coconut-milk base, pak choi, edamame, lime, coriander and udon noodles, with a choice of toppings. This alone shows that the kitchen is not simply ticking off the obligatory few international dishes on a Hungarian menu.

Variety does come with a trade-off: guest reviews include examples of Asian dishes considered too salty. A June 2026 HappyCow reviewer criticised precisely the curry and pad thai, while other guests in 2025 and 2026 specifically praised them. This contradiction is not a fault to conceal but useful information about the kitchen’s consistency.

Poke bowl: freshness in a single bowl

The Pajti poke bowl is one of the favourites most frequently mentioned in reviews. According to the official recipe description available in October 2026, it contains smoked salmon, sushi rice, creamy avocado, edamame, cucumber, carrot, pickled ginger, spring onion and sriracha mayonnaise. Wasabi and sesame can add further sharpness and depth.

The appeal of a dish like this lies in its contrasts: cool fish, soft avocado, warm or lukewarm rice, crunchy vegetables, acidity and a little heat. Guest accounts from 2025 highlighted its freshness, generous portion and balance of flavours.

The current online menu prices the poke bowl at 5500 forints. An important detail is that this version uses smoked salmon; any different versions mentioned in older guest accounts should not automatically be treated as today’s recipe.

Street food and wraps: when you want something handheld

Pajti also enjoys the handheld dishes of the international bistro repertoire. The current menu features a Pajti wrap, BBQ Chicken Wrap, burrito, beef taco and aubergine taco. We do not see these solely as quick snacks: many can easily serve as a full lunch.

Earlier reports suggest the Pajti wrap was also known in a breaded-meat version. As the online product description may have changed since then, check the precise current filling before ordering. The BBQ Chicken Wrap and burrito can also be practical choices during sightseeing or a market stroll when you do not want a long, multi-course meal.

Sushi and the new neighbour

Sushi marked an important milestone in Pajti’s development. The current menu includes salmon and prawn nigiri, salmon-and-avocado maki, tempura prawn maki, cucumber maki and an eighteen-piece sushi box. Keep two small but important rules in mind when ordering: sushi is generally available from 11:30, and is not made on Mondays.

The owners have since taken another step: NemSzomszéd has appeared next to Pajti, with a separate sushi and Asian concept. The official website specifically presents it as a sister venue, offering sushi, matcha drinks and a small Asian grocery shop. It is important not to confuse the two addresses: Pajti is at Bem József utca 1., while NemSzomszéd is next door at number 3.

The meat-free selection is a genuine strength

One of Pajti’s most important advantages is a menu catering for a wide range of dietary preferences. Alongside meat and fish dishes, there are vegetarian and vegan versions of pad thai, vegetable bowls, toasts and plant-based drink alternatives. Several vegan visitors have shared detailed, positive experiences on HappyCow, highlighting the teriyaki-mango bowl, vegan pad thai and coffees made with plant-based milk.

This is especially valuable for mixed groups in which some people want meat and others prefer plant-based food. Allergies require care, however. The restaurant warns on its own website that dishes are prepared in a shared space, so cross-contamination can occur. A gluten-free bun and individual dietary labels do not automatically mean an allergen-free kitchen environment.

With children and dogs: more relaxed than many traditional restaurants

The family-friendly approach is not just about having a children’s menu. Several dedicated children’s dishes appear on the official menu, while guest reviews also mention high chairs, drawing materials and staff who help families with young children. A 2025 HappyCow visitor specifically praised the baby-changing facilities and equipment for little ones.

A restaurant review from 2026 also reports a positive experience of its dog-friendly approach. If you are bringing a larger dog or several animals, it is worth clarifying the precise indoor rules by phone.

Beyond eating in: Wolt, direct ordering and catering

Pajti has long since expanded beyond the café’s walls. The restaurant runs its own online ordering platform, is listed on Wolt and advertises catering for events. According to its official information, it also prepares selections for smaller occasions, including groups of just 15, and indicates delivery availability within a forty-kilometre radius of Keszthely.

Takeaway sushi, wraps and bowls can be particularly practical for people holidaying in apartments, workplace lunches or smaller gatherings with friends. Always check the exact delivery area, charges and that day’s selection on the official platform before ordering.

What do guests like about it?

Generous portions, attentive staff, vegan options, the poke bowl, French toast and pad thai are the positives mentioned most often. At the time of research, the Google average reported by third parties was approximately 4.8 out of five, based on around 1900 reviews. Tripadvisor’s smaller sample also rated the venue highly.

We should not pretend, however, that a good average score makes every criticism disappear. A 2026 HappyCow review mentioned overly salty curry and pad thai; earlier guests sometimes wrote about slower service, inconsistent seasoning and fully occupied tables at peak times. An earlier Street Kitchen report also noted that the interior felt a little dark in rainy weather. These public accounts do not allow exact proportions to be established, so we do not portray individual complaints as widespread faults.

Prices: how much does breakfast or lunch at Pajti cost?

On the restaurant’s itemised online menu available on 18 October 2026, English Breakfast costs 4500 forints, avocado toast 3900 forints, Eggs Benedict 3600–5500 forints depending on the version, and Morning French Toast 2600 forints. The poke bowl is 5500, the Teriyaki-Mango Bowl 4300, the Pajti wrap 3900 and the burrito 4200 forints.

For the Asian dishes, prices can vary with the topping: pad thai is listed at 3800–5800 forints and curry soup at 3500–5500 forints. Among the desserts, French Toast costs 3400, Maple Churros 2600 and brownie 2900 forints. These are the prices shown on the website; subsequent dine-in and delivery prices may differ.

When should you arrive?

For breakfast, we would come on a weekday between 9:00 and 11:00: the 11:00 cut-off for breakfast dishes matters. Sushi lovers should choose a time after 11:30, except on Mondays. For a quieter lunch, it is worth trying before or after the midday rush, and booking a table online can be a good idea for a weekend visit.

The official opening hours are Monday to Saturday 9:00–21:00; closed on Sundays. The reservation system accepts online requests at least two hours before the desired arrival time; for shorter notice, the venue recommends calling. Groups of more than twelve people should also enquire by phone.

What makes Pajti special in Keszthely’s food scene?

Keszthely offers plenty of established Hungarian restaurants, cafés and seasonal Balaton venues to choose from. Pajti offers something different: it does not expect you to organise your whole day around a single kind of meal. You can have coffee or breakfast, grab a quick wrap or sit down to an Asian-inspired dinner.

The story behind the place is consistent with that approach. Two local founders returned to their hometown and developed a business that appeals to residents and tourists alike. Over the years, the team has expanded the menu, built its own ordering system and opened a new Asian venue next door.

We would most readily recommend Pajti if you are looking for a welcoming place in central Keszthely for good coffee, an imaginative breakfast or an international lunch with meat-free options. What deserves to be remembered is not a terrace overlooking Balaton, but the ease with which a simple coffee can turn into an afternoon-long visit.
