Víg Molnár is in Csopak at Kőkorsó utca 1, next to an old watermill, with a big mill wheel, a thatched terrace and a white and green building. A classic csárda with slightly more elegant plating, and the Michelin Guide recommends it, specifically mentioning the Hortobágy pancake and the terrace by the water wheel.
Hungarian classics
The house emblem is the Hortobágy meat-filled pancake in a rich paprika sauce. Alongside, fish soup made from carp and catfish in a cauldron, and duck leg roasted until red with onion mash and apple red cabbage. For dessert, quark dumplings or floating island with toasted almonds and fruit. Meat-free there are fried goat’s cheese balls, morel noodles or marrow stew with truffle cauliflower patties.
The mill
The terrace by the mill wheel is the best part of the place; ask for it when booking. There’s a kids’ menu and private parking. With a dog, call ahead.
Good to know
A 14% service charge is added; a main with a drink is 8–12 thousand HUF. In autumn it’s closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and hours change with the season. You’ll wait when busy, and some wrote about overcooked or dry meat.
Who it’s for
Families and anyone who wants a leisurely Hungarian lunch by an atmospheric mill. With a glass of Csopak wine.
The person behind the place
The mill reborn
For a long time the restaurant next to the old watermill was a favourite in Csopak, then it gradually lost its shine. László Lock and his family relaunched it in 2011, and since then Víg Molnár has again become one of the area's well-known csárdas.

Local tip
Ask for a table by the wheel
In good weather, ask for a spot on the terrace by the mill wheel when booking. First time, look for the Hortobágy pancake, the fish soup and the quark dumplings.
