Above Balatonszőlős, the road suddenly opens out and the Tihany peninsula appears inside a double-heart frame painted with flowers. At Picitmás, the panorama is not decoration behind dinner but one of the experience’s stars: a shade-sail terrace, thatched house, lavender, playground and enough space that you need not get straight back into the car after lunch.
Opened in 2022 on the site of the former Papok Borozója, the restaurant continued a Balatonszőlős hospitality tradition but deliberately took its cooking in a slightly different direction. Chef Pető Levente’s menu gives Hungarian foundation flavours precise, contemporary accompaniments: marrow on toast with red onion jam and mangalica crumbs, pork knuckle with paprika potatoes and mustard sour-cream foam, and veal stew with layered curd-cheese pasta.
The menu’s best dishes do not deny where they came from. Picitmás cordon bleu hides fior di latte and pistachio mortadella inside, with aligot and cucumber salad in sour cream alongside; trout with beetroot bulgur, pumpkin crisps and citrus pak choi shows a lighter side. For dessert, however, return to the familiar: poppy seed bread pudding with vanilla custard and poppy seed pudding is a recurring house favourite.
‘Manufactory’ is not just an attractive suffix. Pastas and cakes are made in-house, the garden supplies what it can, and the little shop features products from nearby craftspeople and producers. The wine list continues that local knowledge: Balaton and Balaton Uplands wineries—including Béla és Bandi, Figula, Gellavilla and Gilvesy—form its backbone.
It is a particularly easy choice with children: there is a playground, with loungers and a large garden for adults. Dogs are welcome too. The terrace fills at peak times, so book for sunset dinner and do not expect a hurried city lunch. You come for the view, vineyard air and an afternoon that stretches out—and fortunately, the food does not fade into the background.
Worth a taste
Picitmás cordon bleu
Fior di latte and pistachio mortadella inside a crisp coating, with aligot and cucumber salad in sour cream. A familiar dish with enough of a distinctive twist to remember.
Local tip
Do not head home after the heart-frame photo
The panoramic photo is just the start: leave time for the garden, loungers and little artisan shop too. Book ahead for a weekend sunset.
