Szőlősi Kocsma is in the centre of Balatonszőlős, on Fő utca, in the building of the old village shop. It reopened in 2017 on the initiative of Attila Tálos, owner of Bortársaság: it is a pub, restaurant, wine shop and community space at once, where locals and holidaymakers sit side by side. The 2025 Gault&Millau guide gave it two toques.
Homely and gourmet at once
The menu changes often and is built on seasonal produce from local farmers. You may find túrós csusza (pasta with curd cheese), fermented cucumber soup, freshly fried fish, porchetta, saddle of rabbit in vadas sauce with dödölle, duck leg strudel or székelykáposzta. According to sources, the kitchen is led by Norbert Krasznai, who previously cooked at well-known Budapest restaurants. Regulars swear by Katika’s stuffed peppers, and once they are gone, they are gone.
Wine and atmosphere
The wine list features Gellavilla Winery and other local wines, and you can take bottles home from the wine shop. The furnishings are simple: the place calls itself a pub, not a bistro. In winter a fireplace keeps it warm, in summer the garden and terrace fill up. Children have their own table.
Good to know
Open Monday and Thursday to Sunday from 11:30 to 22:00, closed Tuesday and Wednesday. In summer, be sure to book a table by phone. If you come by bus, the Községháza stop is right next to the pub.
Who it is for
For anyone who wants serious cooking in a relaxed village setting in the Balaton Uplands and enjoys tasting local wines. A good choice for families too.
Worth a taste
Saddle of rabbit in vadas sauce with dödölle
The menu changes often, but this dish shows the kitchen’s direction well: a homely base, careful execution.
Local tip
Ask about the stuffed peppers
Katika’s stuffed peppers are a regulars’ favourite but sell out fast. Book in summer, and you can take Gellavilla wine home from the wine shop.
