Balaton Étterem Balatonfüred: historic elegance, mouth-watering dishes and lake views

Few restaurants beside Lake Balaton offer more than 130 years of history alongside a delicious lunch. Balaton Étterem is one of Balatonfüred’s most historic dining venues, where the atmosphere of the old spa town meets beloved Hungarian classics and more modern culinary ideas. All this beside Tagore promenade, with a lake-facing terrace and excellent wines from the Balaton Uplands.

Imagine a pleasant summer afternoon, sunlight filtering through the waterfront trees, a cool glass of Olaszrizling waiting on the terrace and a menu that makes choosing difficult. Griddle-cooked pike-perch, juicy duck breast, catfish steak with curd-cheese pasta or a distinctive Italian pizza with pistachio? Balaton Étterem is interesting precisely because it offers both a traditional Füred restaurant experience and more adventurous contemporary flavours.

A restaurant that was already part of Füred’s summer in 1894

Balaton Étterem’s story leads back to old Balatonfüred, when elegant spa visitors strolled along the promenade, café terraces hosted social life and a pleasant lunch was as important to a holiday as bathing itself.

The building was remodelled between 1893 and 1894, and by summer 1894 it was welcoming guests as Balaton kávéház és vendéglő, or Balaton café and restaurant. It has retained that name ever since, which alone makes it distinctive among Balatonfüred’s dining establishments.

Another major transformation followed in 1941: the building was modernised, the terrace layout changed and improvements to the surrounding area created the present-day appearance of Kisfaludy utca. The historic building nevertheless remained part of Füred’s hospitality scene.

Today Balaton Étterem continues this long story with a modern kitchen, panoramic dining spaces and a varied menu. If you enjoy places with a genuine past, that alone makes it worth getting to know.

Lunch beside Tagore promenade, overlooking Lake Balaton

One of Balaton Étterem’s greatest attractions is undoubtedly its location. At Kisfaludy utca 5, directly beside famous Tagore promenade, the waterfront park, great trees and proximity of Lake Balaton create a particularly pleasant atmosphere.

The lake can be enjoyed from the panoramic terrace and some of the restaurant’s dining areas. In good weather, it is particularly pleasant to sit down, watch promenade life and step away for a moment from a holiday packed with activities.

Balaton Étterem is not a secluded, quiet little bistro. It belongs instead to the world of Füred’s classic promenade: a sociable, lively place where time can easily slip by over a long family lunch, dinner with friends or a glass of wine.

The surroundings suit romantic occasions beautifully too, particularly in the late afternoon when the light is softer and a delicious dinner is all that is missing from a perfect day after a waterfront walk.

Balaton Étterem’s menu: Hungarian classics and modern culinary ideas

Balaton Étterem’s menu appeals both to lovers of traditional Hungarian cooking and to those keen to try something more adventurous.

Alongside goulash soup, beef stew, cigánypecsenye and crisp breaded meats, the selection features distinctive fish dishes, truffle ravioli, grilled goat’s cheese, duck breast cooked pink and Italian-style pizzas.

This variety is a great advantage when visiting with family or friends. A lover of Hungarian meat dishes, a fish enthusiast, a vegetarian and someone who simply wants a good pizza can all sit comfortably at the same table.

There is no sharp dividing line between traditional and more modern dishes on the menu. Characteristic Hungarian ingredients sometimes appear with Mediterranean sides, distinctive sauces or playful flavour pairings. That is precisely what makes the selection interesting.

Griddle-cooked pike-perch fillet: Balaton fish with an Italian twist

When visiting Lake Balaton, it is hard to resist a really tempting-sounding fish dish. One of Balaton Étterem’s most appealing choices is griddle-cooked pike-perch fillet with mozzarella-and-tomato-filled gnocchi and spinach cream.

The pairing is exciting in itself. Pike-perch’s delicate white flesh meets mozzarella’s mild, milky flavour and tomato’s freshness. The pleasantly soft texture of gnocchi and the spinach cream’s rich, green character promise a harmonious Mediterranean-style dish.

This choice particularly suits the panoramic waterfront surroundings. Add a glass of fresh Balaton Olaszrizling and you have the makings of a thoroughly pleasant lunch in Füred.

Another interesting choice for fish lovers is grilled catfish steak with paprika sauce and curd-cheese pasta. Here, the full, rich flavours of Hungarian cooking take centre stage.

Catfish steak with paprika sauce and curd-cheese pasta

Catfish steak with paprika sauce and curd-cheese pasta may particularly appeal to those who enjoy traditional Hungarian fish dishes but would welcome a slightly different combination too.

Catfish’s characterful, juicy flesh suits paprika sauces particularly well. Curd-cheese pasta is a genuine Hungarian classic: a pleasantly creamy, substantial accompaniment whose salty, sour-cream flavours complement the rich fish dish beautifully.

Balaton Étterem’s selection also includes fisherman’s soup with catfish fillet, so whether you want fish as a substantial soup or a main course, there are several options.

If two of you would like to sample different fish, the Halízelítő tasting platter for two may be especially interesting. It includes grilled pike-perch fillet, breaded catfish fillet and salmon steak, with potatoes, rice, grilled vegetables and rémoulade sauce.

Duck breast cooked pink with redcurrant sauce: a little elegance on the plate

Among Balaton Étterem’s meat dishes, one of the most exciting choices is duck breast cooked pink with potato gratin and redcurrant sauce.

Duck breast is a particularly rewarding ingredient when prepared carefully. A beautifully browned exterior, juicy meat inside and fruity sauce create a combination that is both rich and pleasantly fresh.

Redcurrants’ bright acidity can be an excellent counterpoint to duck’s fuller flavour, while the creamy, baked layers of potato gratin provide a substantial accompaniment.

This can be a particularly good choice for a romantic dinner or an occasion when you would like something more elegant than the usual Hungarian dishes.

Truffle ravioli, goose liver and the kitchen’s more distinctive side

Balaton Étterem also has interesting choices for lovers of richer, more celebratory dishes.

Pork tenderloin with truffle-and-ricotta ravioli in Parmesan sauce is a particularly exciting combination. Pork tenderloin’s gentler flavour meets earthy truffle aromas, creamy ricotta and Parmesan’s salty richness.

Grilled goose liver with roasted sweet potato and redcurrant sauce also appears on the menu. This is distinctly for lovers of special ingredients: the liver’s rich, silky character is complemented by the fruity sauce’s freshness and sweet potato’s gentle sweetness.

If you would prefer a more classic steak, beef fillet with green peppercorn sauce and sirloin steak are also available.

Kettle-style goulash, beef stew and oven-roasted pork knuckle

Alongside modern dishes, the great favourites of Hungarian restaurants are naturally present too.

Kettle-style goulash with csipetke pinched noodles is an excellent choice if you want to begin lunch with a substantial, steaming soup. Familiar Hungarian seasonings, tender meat and rich broth make a dish that has remained irresistible for decades.

Pan-served beef stew with dumplings also represents home-style flavours. Juicy paprika-rich meat and soft dumplings are a pairing to enjoy down to the final bite.

Oven-roasted pork knuckle with seasoned skin-on potatoes and apple horseradish is aimed at larger appetites. Horseradish’s distinctive heat and apple’s gentle sweetness add an interesting complement to the slow-cooked, richly flavoured pork.

Breaded pork chop, cigánypecsenye and Milanese-style pork chop are also on the menu, so fans of traditional Hungarian cooking will not lack favourites.

Balaton platter for two: a shared feast

Balaton Étterem’s platters for two can be especially tempting for a leisurely family lunch or a gathering with friends.

The Balaton platter contains slow-roasted pork neck, breaded pork chop and chicken breast served with grilled goat’s cheese, accompanied by mixed sides.

This is the kind of shared meal where you need not choose just one meat dish. You can try several flavours as the large platter naturally takes its place in the middle of the table.

The Transylvanian grill platter also deserves attention: mustard pork neck, pork tenderloin, grilled chicken breast, bacon, seasoned potatoes and pickles together offer a substantial meat feast.

If you want a truly generous Hungarian lunch alongside the view, these options are certainly worth exploring.

Pizza with pistachio, mortadella and burrata? Absolutely!

One pleasant surprise at Balaton Étterem is its pizza selection, which goes well beyond the usual ham and salami versions.

Pizza Bronte is particularly tempting for those who enjoy the more adventurous side of Italian food. Creamy mascarpone, mortadella, buffalo-milk stracciatella, pistachio and lemon meet on the dough, creating a distinctive, creamy and fresh flavour combination.

Pizza Burrata comes with prosciutto, rocket and burrata, while Zola e Salame Piccante builds on the bold pairing of spicy Italian salami, gorgonzola and sun-dried tomato.

Classic Margherita, four-cheese and tuna pizzas are, of course, also available.

This versatility is especially useful when one diner fancies a Hungarian meat dish and another a lighter Italian-style lunch.

Vegetarian and vegan dishes, not just for salad lovers

Balaton Étterem’s meat-free selection holds pleasant surprises too.

Grilled goat’s cheese with pumpkin-seed lamb’s lettuce salad, fig jam and toasted seeds is a particularly exciting choice. The cheese’s distinctive, slightly salty flavour is rounded out by sweet fig jam and crunchy seeds.

Mozzarella-and-tomato-filled gnocchi with spinach cream is another appealing meat-free main course, suited to lovers of Italian flavours.

Vegan guests have a separate category on the menu too. Falafel served with grilled vegetables and a vegetable-patty burger offer substantial alternatives for those seeking plant-based dishes.

Balaton Étterem can therefore be practical for groups whose eating habits differ considerably.

Chocolate soufflé with pistachio ice cream and the world of desserts

A pleasant Füred lunch deserves a sweet finish, especially with such tempting desserts on the menu.

Chocolate soufflé with pistachio ice cream may be the best choice for chocolate lovers. Rich chocolate sweetness and cool, characterful pistachio ice cream create a pleasant contrast.

Traditional Hungarian desserts include poppy-seed bread pudding and cold curd-cheese dumplings with sweetened sour cream.

If you would prefer a fresh, fruity sweet, forest-fruit cheesecake may be an interesting choice; the menu identifies it as a lactose-free, gluten-free vegan dessert.

A good dessert, an espresso and a few comfortable minutes on the terrace: sometimes that is all it takes to turn an ordinary lunch into a truly pleasant memory.

Balaton Uplands wines: Figula, Zelna, Gyukli and other favourites

One of Balaton Étterem’s great strengths is its wine selection, representing both well-known and smaller wineries from the Balaton Uplands.

The wine list includes bottles from Figula, Zelna, Gyukli, Fodor and Balogh wineries, as well as Kéknyelű from Badacsony and specialities from several other Hungarian wine regions.

For a wine to accompany pike-perch, a fresh Füred Olaszrizling can be an excellent starting point. Reds are available for richer meat dishes, while chilled rosés suit summer afternoons particularly well.

The list also offers prosecco and Hungarian sparkling wines, so you can find a suitable drink for a more celebratory lunch or romantic dinner too.

Balaton Étterem’s wine selection connects particularly beautifully with Balatonfüred’s historic spa-town atmosphere. Good food, good wine and comfortable, leisurely social life have been part of the venue’s story for more than a century.

A romantic dinner, family lunch or celebration?

Balaton Étterem plays an important role not only in everyday hospitality but also in events.

Its panoramic event room and terrace can offer a distinctive setting for weddings, family celebrations, birthdays, anniversaries and corporate gatherings.

Few backdrops suit a celebratory dinner as well as the view of Lake Balaton and Tagore promenade’s well-kept park surroundings.

Families with children will also find dedicated dishes on the menu, such as panko-coated chicken breast with chips, Milanese-style macaroni and breaded cheese with rice.

The broad menu makes finding shared favourites easier for a multigenerational family lunch too.

A day in Füred that begins on Tagore promenade

One of Balatonfüred’s loveliest activities is simply to walk along Tagore promenade. Great trees, well-kept parks, historic buildings and the waterfront create the atmosphere that has made the town one of Lake Balaton’s best-loved holiday destinations for more than a century.

Balaton Étterem’s location offers a particularly good opportunity to combine a pleasant walk with a food-focused outing.

Leave time to explore the harbour area, waterfront parks and old spa-town buildings too. A leisurely lunch or dinner can then provide a natural conclusion to the day.

If you would like an especially beautiful spot, ask about lake-facing tables when booking. The view is one of Balaton Étterem’s greatest treasures, making its terrace particularly tempting in good weather.
