A family name, a restaurant of their own

The Tompos story spans more than a single Balaton season. After decades in hospitality, the family opened its own restaurant in April 2012 with help from family and friends. It is in Keszthely’s Zámor district, around Libás beach and the sailing marina. Rather than somewhere you happen upon during a town-centre stroll, it is an address worth building into your day. The family’s introduction conveys this long-term approach well.

The supplied exterior photograph makes the building easy to recognise through its brick façade, curved balcony and large Tompos sign. This is not a tiny bistro with a handful of tables. A multi-generational lunch, birthday or gathering of friends feels like a natural occasion here; who is coming matters at least as much as what everyone wants to eat when choosing the venue.

Familiar dishes, thoughtful presentation

The town’s tourism introduction also highlights Hungarian and international cooking. According to the current menu, Bayer Péter leads the kitchen. Alongside traditional restaurant dishes, the selection includes fish, meat-free dishes and seasonal specials.

The photographs show several approaches to presentation: vivid orange purée and vegetables on a dark plate, green accompaniments and crisp onion rings elsewhere, and a layered starter with thinly sliced meat on an elongated platter. It would be unwise to put every dish into the same category. Clarify the exact ingredients when ordering: a photograph whets the appetite but does not replace the day’s menu.

On a first visit, it is practical to choose a direction: do you want a substantial classic lunch or a lighter main and dessert? In a larger group, discuss sharing platters first too. The stated number of diners is a recommendation, not a promise tailored to everyone’s appetite; a substantial starter can change the ideal quantity.

From a terrace lunch to a family celebration

The official introduction describes three separable dining areas accommodating 180 people in total. Options include a terrace, air-conditioned rooms and an enclosed, glazed garden dining area. This allows flexibility according to weather and occasion, but a large capacity does not mean the atmosphere will be the same at every time.

When booking, therefore, mention more than just your party size. If you are bringing a pushchair, planning a quieter conversation or celebrating, table placement may matter too. The town guide also lists a play corner, a nearby outdoor playground, private parking and accessibility features. For a group with children, these often mean more than a long list of dishes.

Timing shapes the evening too

Official information lists live music on Friday evenings and at Sunday lunchtime. If that is the attraction, confirm the particular occasion when booking; if you want a quieter conversation, mention it when choosing your table.

They ask for online bookings at least two days ahead, and an email request is only secure once confirmed. For a same-day idea, telephone. Do not set out assuming that sending a message has reserved your table.

Mention the occasion when booking

For a family celebration, young children or a quieter conversation, request suitable seating. Telephone if arriving within two days; sending an email does not mean your table is confirmed.
