Pörc is a butcher’s shop, delicatessen and restaurant in one, and none of these roles is merely for show. In central Balatonkenese, the Kocsis family has built a place where the sausages hanging at the counter, meat cooking in the open kitchen and modern Hungarian dishes on the plates are all part of the same story.
Five generations behind the butcher’s counter
The family has worked in butchery for almost a hundred and fifty years; Kocsis Jenő, representing the fifth generation, carries on the tradition today. The bistro opened beside the delicatessen in 2018 so that their own meats could show their potential in finished dishes, not just as products to take away.
Pörc is no retro museum. Its menu brings old Hungarian flavours and lesser-known dishes — such as csücsür dumplings or pork trotter stew — into a contemporary setting. Sausages, ribs, meat patties and seasonal meats cook on the open grill, while the accompaniments often balance the substantial centrepiece with vegetables, acidity and freshness.
A delicatessen and bistro in one courtyard
Do more than walk straight to your table. The deli counter displays house-made and carefully selected butcher’s products, hams, bacon, sausages and artisan treats. The bistro, by contrast, is for longer lunches: its covered terrace, green garden and welcoming, slightly rustic interior make it a year-round destination.
The two parts keep different hours. The delicatessen is already open in the morning, while the bistro welcomes lunch and dinner guests from Thursday to Sunday. Before setting out, check which experience you are coming for.
What should you order?
On a first visit, choose a dish that puts the house meat centre stage: grilled sausage, ribs, suckling pig belly or the current grill special. If a modern take on an old Hungarian dish appears on the board, that is worth trying too. Take home some sausage or another smoked product from the deli to complete the Pörc experience.
Who is it for — and who might prefer somewhere else?
Pörc is a strong choice for meat lovers, family lunches, dinners with friends and dedicated culinary outings. The garden and covered terrace are more comfortable with children, dogs or a larger group than a cramped town-centre restaurant.
Vegetarians should check the current selection in advance, as meat is clearly at the centre of the venue’s identity. Prices are higher than at an everyday butcher’s snack counter, and the popular garden can mean waits at peak times.
Getting here and opening hours
Pörc is in central Balatonkenese at Széchenyi utca 1, roughly an eight-minute walk from the railway station. Free parking is available nearby and in front of the shop. The deli opens daily, while the bistro is closed Monday to Wednesday and operates Thursday to Sunday; check the official website for exact daily times before setting out.

The person behind the place
The family's butchery heritage is no decoration
Kocsis Jenő carries on a family trade almost a hundred and fifty years old. At Pörc, the house meat products are not merely decorative items hanging from the walls: the same expertise appears at the deli counter, on the grill and on the bistro plates. The restaurant section, opened in 2018, translated this tradition into contemporary hospitality.

The current grill dish using house meat
Sausage, ribs, suckling pig belly or another seasonal meat directly demonstrates what five generations of butchery tradition mean on the plate.
Local tip
Do not miss the deli counter
After lunch, browse the house-made and selected butcher's products too. The bistro and deli have different hours, so check which part is open before setting out.
The BalatonEats meal plan
How to put your meal together
- 01House sausage or a selection of smoked meats
The deli's products immediately convey the character of the family's butchery tradition.
- 02The current grill dish
Ribs, suckling pig belly or another seasonal meat: ask what the kitchen is proudest of that day.
- 03A contemporary take on an old Hungarian dish
If csücsür dumplings, pork trotter stew or another less common dish is on the board, it best reveals Pörc's playful side.
