Platán has been running in the middle of Balatonföldvár, next to Jubileumi tér, since 1992, and it is one of the few places on the southern shore where you can still get lunch in winter. It is not a trendy place and does not want to be. A long menu, big portions, a covered terrace: the kind of restaurant where everyone from grandma to the grandkids can sit down without any fuss.

Fish and stews

The backbone of the menu is classic Hungarian restaurant cooking: meat soup, goulash, pörkölt with dumplings, fried cheese. The fish section is stronger than average, though. There is catfish paprikash with dill and cottage-cheese pasta (4,850 HUF at the time of research), fried or grilled zander and pistachio-crusted sea bass. Origo’s 2024 on-site test singled out the fried zander and the cottage-cheese pasta.

If someone doesn’t want fish, there is pizza (a Margherita was 2,400 HUF), burgers and a few fun detours, like Hortobágy-style lasagne or a duck version of the brassói. The Platán platter for two (10,800 HUF) is the house emblem, and it really is sized for two. Meat-free options include fried Nübel cheese, feta and spinach pancakes, courgette risotto and a separate vegetarian platter. On weekdays there is a two-course lunch menu, 3,850 HUF when we checked.

The terrace

In summer the covered, tree-shaded terrace is the heart of the place; inside it is simple wooden tables and a homely feel. No need to dress up, and children and dogs are welcome. There are high chairs, and according to a 2024 review they even brought water for the dog. There is no view, though: you can’t see the lake from here.

Good to know

With a menu this long it is hard to get everything equally right, and the reviews show it: in 2024 there were two detailed complaints about an incomplete Platán platter. Information on parking is contradictory (free street parking or a paid zone), and the same goes for opening hours. The official site says they are open daily from 9 to 21, but it doesn’t hurt to call before you set off.

Who it’s for

Mixed groups, families, and anyone looking for a reliable hot lunch on the southern shore out of season. If you want a gastronomic experience, look elsewhere. If you came to eat well and plenty, Platán is a safe bet.

Local tip

Book ahead on summer weekends

At peak times the terrace fills up in minutes, so call ahead with a bigger group. With the Platán platter for two, ask about a smaller portion, one platter can be a lot.

The BalatonEats meal plan

How to put your meal together

  1. 01
    Hortobágy lasagne

The meat-filled pancake, but as a baked pasta with aglio olio sauce. Sounds odd, which is exactly why it's worth trying.

  2. 02
    Fried zander

The favourite of the 2024 Origo test. If fried is too much, you can have it grilled with garlic and spinach rice.

  3. 03
    Földvár pancake

The house dessert: cinnamon fruit and quark cream, baked in the oven on site. Leave room for it.

What guests say

What stays with guests?

Good on a big sample: over four thousand Google reviews at around 4.5/5. Guests like the whole package (portions, prices, service) more than any single standout dish. In the more detailed reviews, value for money is more divided.

From Restaurant Guru's summary of Google reviews, 64 Tripadvisor reviews, 36 detailed Ittjártam.hu guest reviews, 61 verified Szallas.hu reviews, Falatozz.hu ordering feedback and Origo's September 2024 on-site restaurant test.
