Barely a hundred metres from Fonyódliget beach, Lokal at the Lake is the Balaton continuation of the former Lokal47: a small-plates restaurant serving familiar Hungarian flavours in a contemporary, strongly seasonal form. The plates invite sharing, and the rhythm is more an unhurried tasting than a quick lunch.
‘Local’ is no decorative adjective here. The house also organises a farmers’ market in Nagykanizsa, many suppliers are personal partners, and most ingredients come from within 90 kilometres. Fish, game, buffalo, mushrooms, vegetables, fruit, artisan cheese and sourdough bread tell the story of the same surrounding region.
The trout ‘tin’ has meanwhile become one of its best-known dishes. The metal box is opened at the table in a release of smoke and aroma: trout fillet, homemade mayonnaise, dill, pickled red onion and, on the latest menu, blackcurrant vinegar define it. The presentation is playful, but the point is not the trick—it is precise Balaton flavour.
The menu changes continually: figs, roasted peppers or market vegetables may feature just as readily as more substantial meat dishes. Alongside are biodynamic and natural Hungarian wines, homemade cordials, kombuchas, producers’ juices and its own Lokalista lager.
The friendly team and thoughtful farm-to-fork approach have now brought the restaurant into the Michelin Guide’s Hungarian selection too. It is best with several people ordering several plates and leaving time for the kitchen to guide you through the flavours of Fonyód and Zala.

The person behind the place
From the farmers' market to Lake Balaton
Gelencsér Janka and Csillag Richárd brought their experience of the Nagykanizsa farmers' market and Lokal47 to Fonyódliget. The team builds on personal producer relationships, ingredients from within 90 kilometres and approachable hospitality; the Michelin Guide's 2025 Hungarian selection recognised that consistency too.

Trout ‘tin’
Trout fillet with homemade mayonnaise, dill, pickled red onion and smoke, in a tin opened at the table. One of Lokal's best-known, emblematic dishes.
Local tip
Do not think in terms of a single main course
The small-plates concept works best when you share three or four plates per person; ask the team for wine-pairing advice.
The BalatonEats meal plan
How to put your meal together
- 01Trout ‘tin’
Start here: the box opened with smoke is Lokal's playful calling card, containing clean, tangy fish flavours with dill.
- 02A seasonal vegetable plate
Stuffed pointed peppers, charred cabbage or figs best reveal what the market brought that day.
- 03Lokalista cake or the current dessert
Finish with the counter's current cake or a seasonal dessert, potentially in a free-from version too.
