Kistücsök is not a legend because it loudly calls itself one. It is a legend because, since 1992, it has refined the same basic idea: a Hungarian restaurant can be accessible, regional and highly precise at once. Long before local producers, seasonality and year-round opening became fashionable topics around Lake Balaton, they were everyday practice in Balatonszemes.
That remains its strongest statement. Kistücsök is neither a museum nor ceremonious fine dining: classic dishes, seasonal Balaton ingredients, a serious wine list and a calm restaurant rhythm meet here, accommodating both a family lunch and a dedicated culinary excursion.
Two Kistücsöks at one address
In the restaurant, choose à la carte or the four-course Régiónk ízei menu. Half the offering is modern and seasonal; the other deliberately preserves Hungarian restaurant classics. Chicken stew, duck leg with cabbage pasta, venison in vadas sauce with potato doughnuts and floating islands share a menu with pike-perch fillet, pumpkin or a fully vegan regional menu.
The Séfszoba is a different format: a multi-course dinner with an open kitchen, its menu adapted to ingredients available locally and seasonally. Book at least 24 hours ahead and allow two to three hours. With young children, the restaurant is the better choice; the venue itself does not recommend the Séfszoba for under-14s.
What is worth ordering?
On a first visit, the Régiónk ízei menu gives the clearest picture of the kitchen. The current four-course version explores local flavours through mangalica liver pâté, shelled-bean soup, pike-perch fillet and a pumpkin dessert. If you prefer à la carte, share a seasonal starter, then order one classic and one current dish and taste each other’s choices.
Reliable reference points include venison in vadas sauce with potato doughnuts, catfish paprikash with pan-fried curd-cheese pasta, duck leg with cabbage pasta and floating islands. Not because you must always eat the same thing, but because they best reveal how Kistücsök translates the Hungarian restaurant tradition onto contemporary plates.
How much does it cost?
On the current menu, starters and soups range from HUF 2,990–3,990, mains from HUF 5,990–11,990 and desserts from HUF 2,990–3,690. The Régiónk ízei menu costs HUF 17,000 and its vegan version HUF 14,000. The Séfszoba menu is HUF 25,000, with wine pairing at HUF 11,000 per person. A 14 per cent service charge is added to the bill.
Why is it more than a good restaurant?
Food & Room is meant literally: alongside the restaurant are 19 rooms, two suites, a pool, sauna and its own Deli. Dinner need not end with a drive home but can form part of a whole Balatonszemes weekend. The venue is dog-friendly, has private parking and currently holds the Michelin Guide’s Bib Gourmand distinction for good-quality, good-value cooking.
Useful to know in advance
Its reputation and history of more than thirty years create high expectations. Most public guest reviews praise reliable cooking, attentive staff, generous portions and the local wine list. More critical voices say the experience is less intimate at peak times, the different spaces vary in character and the 14 per cent service charge is a sensitive point. Reserve for a summer weekend and ask where your table will be.

The person behind the place
Csapody Balázs, one of Balaton hospitality's legends
He took over Kistücsök's operation in 1992 and over three decades built a nationally known Balaton institution that still functions as a welcoming restaurant. His influence extends far beyond it: he is one of the most consistent advocates of local producers, regional cooperation and a year-round Lake Balaton.

Local tip
Taste each other's choices
If there are two of you, let one choose a Hungarian classic and the other a seasonal recommendation. The Séfszoba is a separate experience; book at least 24 hours ahead.
The BalatonEats meal plan
How to put your meal together
- 01Seasonal starter or soup
Begin with the current menu: this is where the area's seasonal produce is most evident.
- 02One classic + one seasonal main
Order from two different worlds and share tastes: for example, vadas or duck leg alongside a current fish or vegetable dish.
- 03Floating islands or the seasonal dessert
Floating islands are the reliable classic; the seasonal dessert is better if you want to explore the kitchen's fresher side.
What guests say

Recurring praise across many thousands of public reviews focuses on reliable cooking, attentive staff, generous portions and local wines. More critical guests chiefly mention prices, the 14 per cent service charge and an experience at peak times that is less personal than the name led them to expect.
