Fészek Étel és Hotel

Fészek Étel és Hotel in Zánka welcomes guests a few steps from Lake Balaton with a colourful, atmospheric terrace, homely Hungarian dishes and creative food inspired by the Káli Basin. Opened in 2016, the restaurant's best-known original speciality is the Zánkai Kétkezes, a generously filled sandwich made with slow-roasted pork. Earlier offerings also included distinctive Káli pizzas, fish dishes and homemade desserts, while light street food and vegan dishes broadened the selection in spring 2026. A near-beach atmosphere, cycling stop and 13-room hotel under one roof.

The BalatonEats pick Zánkai Kétkezes, Káli Basin-inspired dishes, homely food and a colourful terrace near the beach: Fészek is a friendly Balaton restaurant and hotel on Zánka's waterfront.

Fészek Étel és Hotel in Zánka: where lunch by Lake Balaton has a story of its own

Not every good Balaton restaurant needs a spectacular estate or a famous promenade. Zánka’s Fészek is only a few steps from the water, yet its appeal lies more in its homeliness. Pale-blue frames, flowers, a large terrace and a kitchen that has long combined Hungarian dishes, street food and local ingredients into its own distinctive world. Lunch at Fészek need not be a formal occasion: it can simply be a natural part of a day by the lake.

The name, meaning “nest”, expresses the intention perfectly: together, the hotel and restaurant provide a haven for those coming to swim, cycle or explore the Káli Basin. Guests might be cyclists stopping for a single lunch, families staying a few days or friends gathering for a long summer evening. All have a place in the venue’s story.

An important editorial note: there is recent, verifiable restaurant activity from spring 2026, but the general opening hours on the website date back to 2022. This introduction therefore separates the venue’s documented characteristics from the uncertainties surrounding its current October operation.

An old building becomes a new Balaton meeting place

The story did not begin with the opening of a brand-new building. The property, formerly also known as a strudel house, had gradually deteriorated before Keresztury Éva noticed it while cycling nearby. In a 2016 interview, she described how strange she found it that nobody was renovating it, so she eventually bought the building and began its transformation.

Fészek opened in June 2016 with its present restaurant-and-hotel concept. The older Balaton hospitality venue acquired a younger, cleaner-lined identity while retaining the informality one hopes to find in a lakeside restaurant. Its atmosphere comes not from ostentatious decoration, but from blue details, the large terrace and plants.

The story matters because Fészek is more than a restaurant beneath a hotel. It is an example of how a declining building can become a living part of a village again. The menu and team may change over time, but this local history remains an enduring part of its character.

Keresztury Éva and Fészek’s human side

Keresztury Éva’s name is not merely an entry in a company database. In her 2016 interview, she discussed the renovation; by 2019, she was talking to VEOL about tourism in Zánka and opportunities for cycling visitors. She considered the village’s tranquillity one of its greatest assets and explained that the hotel also sought to welcome guests during spring and autumn.

In March 2020, Zánka’s local council reported that, as Fészek’s owner, she had offered fifty free lunches a day to local people in need or at risk. The gesture says a great deal about the relationship between a hospitality business and its community.

The restaurant’s official legal notice names Zánka Fészek Kft. as the operator, while the company-register summary identifies Keresztury Éva as its manager. The former Hilltop connection is also documented, but we do not automatically infer current ownership, wine-sourcing or operational arrangements from it.

Zánkai Kétkezes: street food with genuine character

For a long time, Fészek built its best-known culinary story around the Zánkai Kétkezes. The playful name means “Zánka two-hander”, but the recipe has a clear idea behind it: a generous handheld sandwich that is a little more interesting than classic Balaton beach-bar food without feeling out of place at the beach.

According to an on-site tasting in 2017, the Kétkezes contained slow-roasted, pull-apart pork inside a small, ciabatta-like loaf with a crisp crust and soft crumb. Rocket, cheese, tomato, red onion, braised vegetables and salsa accompanied it. Some elements took the flavours towards lecsó, while the generous meat filling recalled pulled pork.

With a dish like this, the bite comes together in your hands rather than on the plate: juices soaking into the bread, a crisp crust, fresh greens and meat create the experience together. The Kétkezes still features prominently on Fészek’s website, but we do not claim that the recipe documented in 2017 is available unchanged in October 2026.

Káli pizzas and locally inspired toppings

In 2022, Fészek expanded its offering with a separate range of Káli pizzas. The official pizza menu published as an image at the time listed combinations playing on local names, including Nivegy-völgyi four-cheese, Tapolca, Káli kincsek and Tihany.

The contemporary description of Káli kincsek combined goat’s cheese, smoked blue cheese, Mangalica salami, red onion and sun-dried tomato. The Tapolca pizza featured smoked trout and capers, while the Nivegy-völgyi version centred on several cheeses. These ideas show that the restaurant wanted more than a menu filled with Italian names: it sought its own flavours in the area’s ingredients.

Italian classics sat alongside the regional ideas. However, the pizzas’ old menu prices cannot be treated as 2026 consumer prices, so we do not present them as current costs. Nor do we assume that the complete 2022 pizza selection remains available unchanged.

2026: a lighter, more varied Balaton selection

The most recent verifiable food offering comes not from the website’s old gallery, but from the restaurant’s April and May 2026 announcements. For Ultrabalaton, it put together quick, easy-to-eat dishes: pulled pork in a sourdough bun, an Italian baguette with cured ham, hummus, spreads, a gyros plate and several salad bowls.

The late-May holiday menu painted a more elaborate picture. It included cream of strawberry soup with mint curd-cheese dumplings, marinated asparagus with thyme-scented strawberry compote, sous-vide chicken breast with hollandaise sauce, asparagus risotto with salmon or Dobos goat’s cheese, and vegan red-lentil lasagne.

The overlap between dishes is no accident: alongside traditional Hungarian hospitality, Fészek tries to appeal to guests seeking lighter meals, meat-free dishes or somewhere to eat during sporting activities. The 2026 holiday menu does not mean that every dish listed is also available on the everyday à la carte menu.

Homely dishes worth returning to

Fészek’s earlier menus and guest accounts suggest a kitchen that deliberately makes room for traditional dishes. Catfish paprikash with túrós csusza pasta, hen broth and breaded meats need little explanation: they simply feel right after a long day at the beach or out exploring.

A 2019 Street Kitchen review sampled crisp duck leg, mashed potatoes and braised cabbage, specifically praising the meat’s tenderness. Breaded pork tenderloin with mayonnaise potato salad also received a positive response. However, one pasta dish became truly enjoyable only after being corrected following the guest’s feedback: even this older experience showed that the kitchen was strong, but not infallible.

That is what makes the restaurant interesting. Its offering is not made up solely of fashionable plates, but also dishes many of us grew up with. Quality depends on today’s team, however, so old praise is not a guarantee of current preparation.

The place of fish on a Balaton plate

It is hard to write about a Balaton restaurant without mentioning fish. Fészek’s earlier offering demonstrably included fisherman’s soup, catfish paprikash and whole roast trout. Salmon and smoked trout also appeared in the 2026 season-opening selection, showing that fish remained part of the kitchen’s thinking.

Catfish paprikash with túrós csusza is a particularly good example of traditional Hungarian flavours: rich paprika sauce and tender fish, accompanied by the tang of sour cream and curd cheese on the pasta. When made well, it needs no further tricks. The former smoked-trout-and-caper pizza represented the kitchen’s more playful side.

We do not claim that all the fish comes from Lake Balaton. Clarifying species, sourcing and current availability is the restaurant’s responsibility, particularly if a dish’s origin is to be emphasised on BalatonEats.

Meat-free dishes beyond a token option

Many Balaton restaurants still offer vegetarian or vegan guests only a handful of compromise dishes. Fészek’s spring 2026 list seemed much more varied: announcements included Mediterranean and Asian salad bowls, vegan red-lentil lasagne, kapia-pepper hummus and mango rice pudding.

The holiday offering presented asparagus risotto with two toppings, salmon or goat’s cheese, suggesting flexibility. The available sources indicate that the venue aims to appeal to more than traditional meat lovers.

Caution is still needed with allergens. One 2026 dessert was labelled gluten-free and vegan, but that does not mean the entire kitchen is free from cross-contamination. Anyone with a food allergy or serious intolerance should discuss each dish individually.

Desserts: from childhood flavours to lighter sweets

The desserts show the same dual approach as the mains. At Whitsun 2026, the selection included császármorzsa with homemade jam, somlói sponge dessert and mango rice pudding labelled vegan and gluten-free. Earlier introductions also featured curd-cheese smarni with lavender apricot jam.

Curd-cheese smarni can make an intriguing, locally inspired finish: soft, browned pieces of batter meet fruity apricot and a carefully judged touch of lavender. Császármorzsa offers another mood, with caramelised morsels and the pleasant acidity of jam.

Dates matter throughout any dessert recommendation. Older descriptions help explain the venue’s style but do not replace checking the day’s sweets or a fresh menu.

Wine on the terrace: the Hilltop connection

Fészek had a particularly interesting chapter involving wine. According to a 2019 Street Kitchen report, the restaurant was then connected to the ownership group behind Hilltop winery, and its wine list was built around Hilltop wines. A 2018 report also describes a tasting held here with Kamocsay Ákos and the Hilltop team.

Today, this is better treated as a story than a current wine list. The connection between a restaurant near Lake Balaton in Zánka and a Neszmély winery was unusual yet intriguing: a local culinary stopping point offered a chance to discover another Hungarian wine region.

The vintages and prices on older wine lists still available online cannot be used as today’s restaurant offering. Guests coming for wine should ask about the current selection rather than choose from the 2018 list.

Breakfast a few steps from the water

One of Fészek’s practical advantages is that it has offered reasons to visit beyond lunch and dinner. Breakfast was regularly provided for hotel guests, and outside visitors were welcomed in the past too. On-site reports mentioned homemade jams, cold cuts, cheeses, egg dishes and freshly prepared coffee.

Close to the shore, breakfast takes on a special atmosphere. A few minutes earlier, you may have been walking by the water; now, sitting on the terrace, you are planning your next cycling route or the day’s swimming. In that sense, Fészek is not just a restaurant but a starting point for a day at Balaton.

Positive reviews of hotel guests’ breakfasts should not be conflated with the restaurant’s overall à la carte quality. The exact breakfast price, contents and availability to passing visitors in 2026 need to be checked separately.

Thirteen rooms, a world of their own

A small, 13-room hotel operates above and alongside Fészek’s restaurant. Immediate proximity to the beach and cycle route is a real advantage for anyone who does not want to get in the car for every outing. Several reviews praise the accommodation’s atmosphere, more comfortable rooms and friendly staff.

In October 2026, its overall Booking.com rating was around 8.5/10, with location scoring 9.5/10. These are accommodation ratings, not pure assessments of the restaurant’s cooking. Nevertheless, the location is a tangible asset for the restaurant too.

Hotel guests’ criticisms include smaller rooms, inconsistent Wi-Fi and some maintenance details. We would not factor these into a BalatonEats restaurant score, but they are worth knowing when presenting the venue as a whole.

Cycling in Zánka: a natural stopping point

The Balaton cycle route runs beside Fészek, bringing cyclists almost to its door. The accommodation has also advertised bicycle hire, and quick, sport-friendly dishes were prepared for major events. The 2026 Ultrabalaton relay changeover point was directly in front of the building.

Light salads, sandwiches and takeaway-friendly dishes suit those who do not want a two-hour lunch break during a longer ride. Shaded parking and the nearby railway station further improve accessibility.

Bicycle-hire capacity and current prices should not be taken for granted from a brochure several years old. Contact the accommodation before setting off, particularly if you will not be bringing your own bike.

With children and dogs too

Fészek has long presented itself as family- and dog-friendly. Its informal restaurant with a terrace is easier to imagine with children than a rigid venue built around a multi-course dinner menu.

Information published in 2025 mentioned 13 hotel rooms, an environment described as accessible, free parking, bicycle hire, and baby- and pet-friendly operation. According to Booking.com, pets are accepted at the accommodation, possibly for an additional charge.

However, a hotel accepting dogs does not automatically prove that dogs are allowed in every indoor restaurant area. It is worth asking separately about this and any restaurant-specific rules.

The colourful terrace is half the experience

In photographs of Fészek, the plate is not the only star. The large covered terrace’s colourful umbrellas, white and turquoise chairs, hanging lamps, plants and relaxed, slightly eclectic furnishings make the venue recognisable from a distance.

The shore is tangibly close, but it would be unwise to promise a direct, unobstructed Balaton panorama from every table. According to an earlier on-site report, part of the terrace faces the beach car park, with the water glimpsed behind oleanders. Emphasising the near-beach, lakeside atmosphere is much more accurate.

This is not a disadvantage, but a reflection of the venue’s true scale. Fészek is more a friendly stopping point than an exclusive panoramic restaurant.

What do guests love, and where are the cracks?

Guest reviews make the restaurant’s strengths fairly clear. Several visitors praise the homely dishes, pizzas, breakfast, pleasant terrace and helpful waiting staff. Google’s combined hotel-and-restaurant rating was around 4.3/5, while Tripadvisor’s restaurant listing shows 3.9/5 from 56 reviews.

Criticism mainly concerns inconsistent service, waiting times, prices perceived as more premium, and some dishes with variable standards. Ittjártam.hu has just four detailed restaurant reviews averaging 3.5/5, so it would not be fair to generalise from that alone.

We do not use complaints about the hotel as criticism of the restaurant. Google, Booking.com and Tripadvisor ratings cover different services and reviewers, so combining them would be misleading.

What should you order if you stop for just one lunch?

The most obvious choice would be the Zánkai Kétkezes, tied to the restaurant’s own story, if it is on the menu. Slow-roasted pork, crisp bread and fresh vegetables once made it the restaurant’s signature dish. If the Kétkezes is unavailable, it may be worth exploring the seasonal main-course specials.

Based on the spring 2026 menu, cream of strawberry soup with mint curd-cheese dumplings, a pulled-pork bun and császármorzsa with homemade jam could form an appealing multi-course tasting. This is an editorial selection of documented dishes, not a guaranteed menu currently available to order.

Menu prices should only be taken from a fresh, verifiably dated list. Some menus published as images on the website date from 2022–2023, and changing costs mean they cannot be used as prices payable today.

Why visit Fészek in Zánka?

Because some places have more than a single trick to their story. Fészek is at once a rescued building, a meeting point near the beach, a small hotel, a cycling rest stop and a restaurant with a speciality of its own called Zánkai Kétkezes.

The Káli pizzas, the earlier kitchen’s use of local ingredients, newer vegan dishes and community involvement all add something to this picture. Keresztury Éva’s story of saving the building and her 2020 donation give this recommendation a particularly strong human background.

Worth a taste

Zánkai Kétkezes

Because Fészek has a character of its own. The Kétkezes, the earlier Káli pizzas, the kitchen's emphasis on local ingredients and the informal atmosphere near the beach create a world that is distinctly Balaton, Hungarian and a little international.

Local tip

Best tackled with two hands!

If available, start with the Zánkai Kétkezes, and do not insist on tackling it with a knife and fork. If it is not on the current menu, look at the seasonal dishes, particularly the pulled-pork, fish and vegetable options. Arriving by bike has the added advantage of the nearby cycle route.

The BalatonEats meal plan

How to put your meal together

  1. 01
Cream of strawberry soup with mint curd-cheese dumplings

Cool, silky strawberry soup builds on the fruit's natural sweetness, lightened by fresh mint aromas. Soft curd-cheese dumplings give the dish substance. A particularly pleasant start on a warm Balaton day when you want something more refreshing than traditional meat broth.

  2. 02
    Pulled-pork bun with BBQ sauce

Slow-cooked, pull-apart pork, a sourdough bun and rich barbecue sauce. The gently smoky, sweet sauce and juicy meat make a satisfying street-food combination. The dish was documented in the spring 2026 selection and connects neatly with Fészek's older Zánkai Kétkezes tradition.

  3. 03
    Császármorzsa with homemade jam

Soft pieces of shredded pancake with browned edges, a little icing sugar and rich fruit jam. The kind of dessert that needs no complicated pastry technique yet can be irresistible when freshly served. A particularly fitting finish for Fészek's homely character.

What guests say

What stays with guests?

The restaurant's recurring strengths are its pleasant surroundings, good location and homely cooking loved by many. The 2019 Street Kitchen review, for example, was so positive that the author returned twice in one week. Particular praise went to the duck leg, breaded pork tenderloin and flexible handling of a problem.
Other guests, however, reported slower or less attentive service and value for money that did not always meet expectations.
Overall, the public picture is of a likeable Balaton restaurant with a distinctive atmosphere, but not a completely consistent performance in every situation.

Based on 56 Tripadvisor restaurant reviews, four detailed Ittjártam.hu reports, Google's combined hotel-and-restaurant reviews, Restaurant Guru's guest-review collection, Booking.com accommodation reviews, and on-site reviews by Street Kitchen in 2019 and Sunseaty in 2017.
