Village cooking with a family signature

Cvekedli can be the leisurely, sit-down part of a trip to Vászoly. The restaurant at the former Zománc address now operates as Cvekedli; photographs saved under the old name do not refer to a separate current restaurant. The red-and-white interior and exposed beams in the pictures provide a homely setting for Hungarian dishes.

The family behind the restaurant

Tibor Havasi and his family created Cvekedli and also run Kuti-Kerti Kisvendéglő in the same village. They are separate restaurants sharing an approach: familiar village flavours in a contemporary restaurant setting. Roles within the family are distinct. Tibor oversees the main courses, while his son Márk, a trained pastry chef, is responsible for desserts.

Start with the namesake dish

Cvekedli, or cabbage pasta, has a central role here. According to the restaurant, it can be ordered in smaller or larger portions, as a starter or main course, with pepper or sugar. Few restaurants put such an everyday dish at the heart of their identity. It can reveal more about the house’s approach than immediately choosing the most elaborate plate.

Catfish soup also represents the Hungarian side of the kitchen. Blackboard specials and the menu follow the seasons, so choose from what is available today rather than relying on an old photograph. Homemade cordials, preserves and cakes are also part of the officially described selection.

Dessert deserves its own chapter

Poppy-seed bread pudding and cottage-cheese dumplings are the sweets singled out by the house. For the dumplings, it highlights citrus zest, toasted crumbs, cinnamon sour cream and raspberry purée. We would therefore plan for dessert from the beginning: a smaller opening course leaves room to appreciate it. Recipes and availability may change.

Planning the visit

Use the precise address, Vazul utca 8 in Vászoly, rather than navigating to the family’s other restaurant. The contact page lists Wednesday–Saturday 11:00–21:00 and Sunday 11:00–20:00. We suggest calling to book a weekend lunch. Ask ahead about vegetarian or other dietary requirements: a willingness to adapt dishes is not the same as a guaranteed separate menu.

We would choose it for an unhurried lunch and conversation after a village walk. For a quick beach snack, another kind of venue may fit better. Cvekedli’s interest lies in giving familiar dishes and family work room to speak.

Local tip

Plan dessert from the start

A trained pastry chef in the family is responsible for the sweets. Ask about the day’s dessert before planning lunch.
