At Csopak railway station, the train is not background noise but part of the scene: it rolls past the window as the next plate is prepared in the kitchen. Resti was long known around Lake Balaton as a six-seat, Michelin-recommended tasting venue, but opened a new chapter in 2026. Its current motto is apt: ‘Not fine dining. Not a snack bar.’ Rather, a small, approachable restaurant cooking what the team themselves would enjoy eating.
There is no permanent menu. The short daily offering follows sourcing, the season and the team’s mood, so check social media on the day you plan to arrive. The house phrase ‘when it’s gone, it’s gone’ is not a marketing trick: your best chance of the full selection is around Saturday opening. Plates feature contemporary but accessible Hungarian comfort food: meat from the smoker, paprika gravy with nokedli dumplings, spreads and playful desserts such as poppy seed potato dumplings with sour cherries.
Its strength is closeness. The kitchen is not a closed workshop, conversation quickly develops between chefs and guests, and the station makes every arrival a little cinematic. The intimacy of the old six-seat era remains, but the new private room can accommodate groups of 10–12, with larger events possible by prior arrangement.
Wines from around Lake Balaton lead the drinks selection, while coffee is made from Bányai specialty beans. This is not somewhere to order from a twenty-page menu; instead, let the day’s three or four dishes guide you. Prices may initially seem high for a station restaurant, but behind them are small batches, considerable handwork and personal attention.
Resti in 2026 has become more relaxed, not more superficial. Vázsonyi Viktor’s joyful cooking has exchanged the precision of its Michelin-recommended past for a weekend restaurant rhythm: fewer dishes, more spontaneity, fewer formalities. If you can embrace a changing menu, an occasional arriving train and the possibility that a favourite dish sells out, those are exactly what make it lovable.

The meat of the day—whatever comes out of the smoker
Resti has no permanent icon dish: the daily meat best shows the team's thinking. Smoke, juices, Hungarian flavour foundations and a simple side—always a little different.

Do not look for the old menu
