Homola Borterasz looks out over Lake Balaton from among the vines above Paloznak. The winery, founded around 2008–2009, opened its panoramic terrace in 2015, bringing Homola Szabolcs’s vision of wine, landscape, music and community together in a single relaxed Balaton experience.
The estate cultivates 15 hectares of its own vineyards and is converting to organic farming; wines are generally made with minimal intervention and long ageing, and many are unfined and unfiltered. Olaszrizling is the main focus, but Riesling, Pinot Gris, Kékfrankos, Syrah and sparkling wines also express the character of the Csopak–Paloznak and Tihany vineyards.
The terrace is not a conventional restaurant but more of an all-afternoon wine retreat. Artisan cold platters, picnic baskets and seasonal food-truck or grill offerings accompany the wines; loungers, barrel tables and lake views are constants. The ‘DJ a szőlőben’ evenings and the spirit of Paloznaki Jazzpiknik show that wine at Homola always comes with a helping of culture and community.
Worth a taste
Homola wine tasting with an artisan cold platter
The estate's fresh and single-vineyard wines, local cheeses and hams, and the panorama together truly capture the spirit of Paloznak.
Local tip
Stay until sunset
The walk up to the terrace is steep, but the late-afternoon light is worth it. Check the events calendar in advance: a DJ a szőlőben evening has a very different atmosphere from a quiet Saturday tasting.
The BalatonEats meal plan
How to put your meal together
- 01100% Olaszrizling
The estate's lighter, more approachable side, offering a good introduction to Homola's style and Csopak–Paloznak Olaszrizling.
- 02Hajnóczy Olaszrizling
A more concentrated single-vineyard wine, showing how the same grape can produce a more serious, longer-aged expression.
- 03Tihanyi Kékfrankos
The volcanic Tihany terroir and the red-wine style offer a contrast after the whites; especially good with cheese or grilled dishes.
