Teri Mama Vendéglője in Hévíz: Transylvanian roots, a traditional oven and hearty home-style food
Many restaurants in Hévíz build on the bustle around the thermal lake, but one inn is worth heading a little further uphill towards Egregy for. Teri Mama Vendéglője, at Zrínyi utca 147. near the Roman archaeological garden and Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, welcomes lovers of traditional Hungarian food. Red-patterned tablecloths, old ceramics, a traditional beehive-shaped oven and a shaded terrace: the setting does not pretend to be a modern bistro. Instead, it recalls how enjoyable a leisurely family lunch can be when both kitchen and service do their jobs well.
The restaurant’s strength comes not from a single fashionable speciality but from several mutually reinforcing details. Its namesake came to Hungary from Transylvania, and her daughter Tünde carries on her cooking traditions. The menu is exceptionally broad, from classic soups through game and stuffed cabbage to curd-cheese dumplings. Guest reviews repeatedly emphasise the same things: generous portions, approachable waiting staff and flavours that persuade regular visitors to Hévíz to book another table.
Who was Teri Mama? A family story from Transylvania to Hévíz
A real family story lies behind the name. According to Street Kitchen’s 2022 on-site report, Teri Mama moved to Hungary from Transylvania in the early 1990s. She is no longer the one at the stove: her daughter, Tünde, has taken over the cooking. Family continuity here is not simply an old recipe notebook in a display window, but an approach recognisable in the menu’s character.
Teri Mama’s earlier restaurant operated on Zrínyi utca, not far from today’s venue. They moved to the present location in 2015, closer to Egregy’s church and Roman remains. The new building allowed a more spacious restaurant, open in winter and with garden seating in summer. We would not add further personal biographical details without evidence: the story is already strong enough to give the place a human face.
The quieter side of Hévíz: at the gateway to Egregy
The thermal lake is the town’s most visited part, but northern Hévíz offers another world. Around Egregy, vineyards, cellars, churches and Roman remains alternate. Teri Mama Vendéglője is on Zrínyi utca near the Roman archaeological garden, not immediately beside the lake. This distinction matters: the restaurant promises neither a panorama nor a waterfront terrace, but a more sheltered, village-like dining experience.
It is worth combining lunch or dinner with a walk through Egregy. The restaurant then becomes more than somewhere to eat: it is part of an outing revealing another side of Hévíz. According to the restaurant’s own information, free parking is available for guests arriving by car.
A traditional oven, woven tablecloths and a carefully preserved inn atmosphere
Anyone entering Teri Mama should not expect fashionable industrial lamps, concrete walls or an open show kitchen. Timber and textiles, ceramics, wall decorations and the beehive-shaped oven evoke a traditional rural house. In 2022, Street Kitchen specifically noted that cleanliness and upkeep were impressive alongside the rustic furnishings.
In warmer months, the terrace surrounded by greenery is the most pleasant choice. Red-and-white awnings above, wooden tables and benches below: here it really makes sense to stay a little longer over a spritzer or lemonade. In cooler weather, the indoor rooms and oven-centred atmosphere define the venue.
The 2026 menu: broad enough to make lunch a serious decision
The March 2026 menu published on the restaurant’s official website lists Hungarian and international dishes over 22 pages. The document priced broth with homemade liver dumplings at HUF 1790, kettle goulash at HUF 3490, Transylvanian stuffed cabbage at HUF 3940 and beef stew with homemade dumplings at HUF 4690. Game, roast pork, beef steaks, poultry, fish, whole pikeperch and pork knuckle available by advance order, children’s portions and classic desserts complete the selection.
This wide choice is one of Teri Mama’s attractions, but also a compromise: this is not a ten-course tasting menu reimagined daily. Guests choose instead from old Hungarian favourites, often ordering the same dish repeatedly precisely for its familiar flavours. Prices reflect the menu as of March 2026 and may change later. Some mains require side dishes to be ordered separately, as indicated on the menu.
Transylvanian stuffed cabbage: one of the family kitchen’s most telling dishes
If we wanted to connect Teri Mama’s story with a single dish, Transylvanian-style stuffed cabbage would be a strong choice. It appears on the official 2026 menu, and the namesake’s Transylvanian origins give it additional meaning. Good stuffed cabbage does not try to be spectacular: tangy cabbage, a substantial meat filling, slowly mingling spices and sour cream are its essence.
We do not claim that Teri Mama herself devised the current recipe; public sources do not document this. They do establish that Transylvanian roots and family cooking are part of the venue’s identity, and that the dish genuinely appears on the menu published as current. For anyone curious about traditional home-style food, it is one of the choices most closely suited to this place.
Broth with homemade liver dumplings: simplicity becomes a test
In genuine family restaurants, the simplest dishes often reveal more about the kitchen than the most expensive meats. One such dish is broth with homemade liver dumplings, also present on the 2026 menu. Street Kitchen tried it in 2022, specifically praising the hot, flavourful stock and well-textured liver dumpling.
This soup is an excellent start if you want to try several courses. Bear portion sizes in mind, though: generosity is an almost constant theme in guest reviews of Teri Mama.
The world of potato-coated and crisp meats
Classic breaded meat has some more spectacular relatives. During its 2022 visit, Street Kitchen tried a mátrai borzas with sour cream, cheese and salad, praising the balance of crisp coating, juicy meat and sour cream. On the 2026 menu, a potato-coated pork dish with mixed salad appears under the name “Máltai Borzos”, priced at HUF 6520. We do not treat the two names as proven references to the same recipe.
In borzas-style dishes, the coating is more than a protective layer: potato and browning add flavour and texture of their own. Teri Mama’s familiar meat mains also include garlic pork steak, breaded pork schnitzel, pork knuckle and betyárborda. Anyone seeking filling, well-seasoned Hungarian classics is unlikely to find the selection short.
Game dishes: red-wine ragout, venison with berry pear and cornelian cherry
At Teri Mama, game is more than an occasional winter addition. The 2026 menu has three separate dishes: game ragout in red wine (HUF 5690), venison slices with a piquant cornelian-cherry sauce (HUF 7570) and braised venison with berry-topped pear (HUF 7570). This offers an interesting detour from stuffed cabbage and breaded meat.
Red-wine ragout evokes the world of long, slow cooking. Cornelian cherry’s tart fruitiness or the sweetness of berries can give robust game a different character. However, guest reviews from 2021 include criticism of the quality of the pear and accompaniment served with a venison dish. This should not be hidden: the dish promises much, but experiences of its execution have differed.
Roast duck with red cabbage: the spirit of an old-fashioned Sunday lunch
The March 2026 menu also includes roast duck with braised red cabbage and buttered potatoes for HUF 6990. It is not a complicated culinary performance, and that is precisely its appeal. Well-roasted duck, cabbage’s sweet-and-sour counterpoint and buttery potatoes need to work together.
A foreign guest review from May 2026 praises the duck, while a returning visitor specifically highlights consistency over the years. This does not guarantee success on every plate, of course, but suggests that roast duck is more than just another classic listed on the menu.
Steak tartare, aubergine spread and Teri Mama’s pantry
Those who like to begin with a cold starter can choose steak tartare (HUF 7190) or “Teri Mama Kamrájának Kencéi” (HUF 3590), a starter particularly expressive of the restaurant’s character. The latter lists goose fat, zacuscă, aubergine spread, homemade ciabatta and vegetables. Zacuscă’s Transylvanian and eastern European associations fit especially well with the restaurant’s family origins.
An August 2025 guest review of the steak tartare praised its tableside preparation and fresh vegetable accompaniment. This service style should not automatically be guaranteed on every occasion, so ask when booking if that particular flourish interests you.
Fish dishes and whole pikeperch by advance order
Alongside meat and Transylvanian specialities, the menu offers fish choices appropriate to Balaton. According to the March 2026 document, these include grilled pikeperch fillet with grilled vegetables, pikeperch with creamy vegetables and jasmine rice, panko-coated pikeperch fillet and garlic trout. Pikeperch fillet variations were listed at around HUF 6960, and trout at HUF 6720.
One speciality is whole roast pikeperch, which must be ordered for at least two people at least one day in advance. The same advance-order rule applies to pork-knuckle dishes for two. If you are planning a family occasion or a long dinner, these dishes arranged beforehand may offer an even better experience than the usual à la carte choice.
Pancakes, curd-cheese dumplings and classic sweets without a pastry counter
Teri Mama’s desserts do not try to compete with modern pâtisserie showpieces. Instead, there are sour-cherry-and-poppy-seed pancakes with sour-cherry sauce (HUF 1990), curd-cheese pancakes with vanilla sauce (HUF 1890), cocoa-cream pancakes (HUF 1890), curd-cheese dumplings with hot sour-cherry sauce (HUF 2880), chestnut purée (HUF 1790), plus brownie and cheesecake.
I would choose the sour-cherry-and-poppy-seed pancakes to finish. Poppy seed’s distinctive earthiness and sour cherry’s acidity are a classic Hungarian pairing that can work even after a rich main. Street Kitchen chose and praised the chestnut purée in 2022; a comparative guest report from September 2026 liked the cocoa-cream pancakes’ ingredients but was less impressed by the dessert’s serving temperature and overall balance.
Service that becomes a story of its own
Teri Mama’s reviews contain a striking amount of praise for the staff. Guests describe courteous, attentive and often humorous waiters who communicate in several languages. During a single visit, Street Kitchen’s author observed a waiter speaking four languages, highlighting precisely that natural, confident professionalism.
This is no minor detail in Hévíz, which receives many returning visitors from abroad. A good waiter here can transform the mood of dinner. Not every experience is like this, however: occasional complaints have also concerned unfriendly service and delays when paying.
Returning guests, strong ratings and some important counterpoints
The restaurant’s public reputation is exceptionally favourable: sites aggregating Google reviews showed around 4.7/5 from several thousand reviews, Tripadvisor 4.5/5 from over four hundred, and Szallas.hu 9.6/10 from 116 verified guest reviews. These databases cover different visitors and periods, so the scores cannot be combined into a single average.
Flavours, generous portions, homely surroundings and service dominate the positive side. Critical comments mention some average or ready-made-seeming side dishes, less successful salads, overly warm desserts and, occasionally, less attentive service. A comparative review in September 2026, for example, praised the juiciness of bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin but found its potatoes and salad less outstanding.
On this evidence, Teri Mama is best judged not as fine dining flawless in every detail, but as a highly successful, likeable traditional restaurant. Its cooking and hospitality have considerably more character than an average tourist menu, though this does not make occasional faults invisible.
How much does a satisfying meal at Teri Mama cost in 2026?
Based on the March 2026 menu, most soups cost around HUF 1800–3500, classic prepared dishes HUF 3900–4700 and a substantial proportion of meat mains HUF 4500–8300; premium beef tenderloin and goose liver cost more. Desserts generally fall around HUF 1800–2900. A two- or three-course meal with a drink therefore comes to roughly HUF 7000–12,000 per person, potentially more with special cuts of meat, depending on actual choices and separately ordered sides.
An important timing distinction: Street Kitchen’s 2022 review had a complete lunch under HUF 6000, but quoting that as a 2026 price would be misleading. The fresh menu is a much better reference point.
Musical evenings, table bookings and family occasions
During high season, the restaurant holds live-music dinners on several occasions. Earlier descriptions mention three musical evenings a week, roughly from May to the end of October, but specific days should always be confirmed directly. Advance table booking is strongly recommended during popular periods and at weekends: many guests report a full house.
Whole pikeperch or pork knuckle for two requires arrangements at least one day in advance. The restaurant also advertises its own car park, bank-card payments and SZÉP-card acceptance. The menu lists smaller portions for children. Guests with dogs should ask directly about on-site rules, as sufficiently reliable, current public information could not be found.
Worth a taste
Transylvanian stuffed cabbage
Because Teri Mama's home-style cooking has genuine family continuity behind it. Its namesake came from Transylvania, and her daughter Tünde carries on the restaurant's kitchen. Traditional food is accompanied by service that guests have specifically praised for years.
Local tip
Explore Teri Mama's pantry!
Look near the beginning of the menu for “Teri Mama Kamrájának Kencéi”: goose fat, zacuscă, aubergine spread, homemade ciabatta and vegetables on one platter. With a group, it makes a particularly good shared start before the substantial meat dishes. Ask about whole pikeperch or pork knuckle for two at least one day ahead.
The BalatonEats meal plan
How to put your meal together
- 01Teri Mama Kamrájának Kencéi
Goose fat, zacuscă, aubergine spread, homemade ciabatta and fresh vegetables. This starter perhaps connects even more directly with Teri Mama's Transylvanian heritage than the stuffed cabbage. Several flavours, different textures and the pleasure of sharing, all on one platter.
- 02Transylvanian stuffed cabbage
Perhaps the main course best suited to the restaurant's name and story. Tangy cabbage, a rich meat filling and slowly mingling flavours promise a meal that does not rush you. The family roots of Teri Mama's kitchen make it particularly interesting to try here.
- 03Sour-cherry-and-poppy-seed pancakes with sour-cherry sauce
After a rich main, sour cherry's bright acidity provides a welcome counterpoint to the poppy-seed filling's distinctive sweetness. A Hungarian classic that does not pretend to be a modern pastry marvel, yet can make a memorable finish to a traditional lunch.
What guests say
What stays with guests?
An especially interesting aspect of Teri Mama's reputation is the prominence not just of food but of the human element. Many visitors write not simply about a good lunch, but about being warmly welcomed, helped with their choices and enjoying conversations with the staff.
Most negatives relate to particular dishes or individual service situations. There is no strong, persistently recurring pattern of criticism that fundamentally calls the restaurant's good reputation into question.

!
Good to know before you go
- The selection can feel too heavy: a meat-centred menu built around Hungarian classics is not ideal for everyone.
- A long menu: guests seeking a modern kitchen focused on a few dishes may find the selection too broad and traditional.
- Not every side dish is equally memorable: a 2026 on-site comparison, for example, criticised average chips and a less distinctive salad.
