Hableány is difficult to describe as just a restaurant. In central Badacsony, close to the railway, harbour and beach, it nevertheless creates a world of its own: wall-to-wall glass, barrels on the terrace, Laposa wines in the glasses and a working winery behind the dining area. It is a bistro, wine bar, wine shop and estate headquarters in one — a stop where lunch can easily turn into a tasting.
A Badacsony meeting place since 1883
Hableány’s history goes back far beyond the current clean-lined building. The first guesthouse opened in 1883, Jókai Mór stayed here a few years later, and for generations the building remained an important meeting place in Badacsony. The Laposa family bought it in 2014 and, after extensive renovation, reopened it in its current form in 2019.
Modernisation did not erase the past. The family and local-history exhibition, the winery space and the bistro tell the same story: how to revive an iconic Balaton building without turning it into a museum. Hableány is now a lively, busy place — one of its greatest strengths, although those seeking peace at the height of summer should arrive earlier.
A modern Balaton bistro with ambitious dishes
The cooking builds on Hungarian and Balaton foundations without dwelling on nostalgia. Catfish paprikash with curd-cheese pasta is a good example: familiar flavours arrive as a carefully composed bistro plate. The same thinking appears in the skin-seared pike-perch, confit duck leg and slow-roasted beef cheek. The current menu may change seasonally, but the direction is consistent: local connections, clean flavours and dishes designed to accompany wine.
Desserts are more than an obligatory final course. Curd-cheese dumplings and strudel take the classic route, while chocolate and fruit-based plates express the venue’s more elegant, playful side. There is a separate children’s menu and a vegetarian main course too, although fish and meat dishes are clearly the strongest part of the selection.
Wine is part of the story, not just an accompaniment
The full Laposa range is available here, and that makes a real difference to the experience. Rather than simply ordering wine with your food, the staff help you find pairings in which Badacsony Olaszrizling, Kéknyelű or Pinot Gris genuinely adds to the dish. If time allows, a winery tour and tasting booked in advance complete the picture; the tanks visible from the dining area constantly remind you that this is a working winery.
When should you visit?
Arrive just after opening on Thursday or Friday to see Hableány at its calmer, more spacious best. Summer weekends and events are considerably livelier, and reservations are strongly recommended then. Dogs are welcome and it works for families too. The railway station is a few minutes’ walk away, while several nearby car parks serve drivers — although they fill quickly at peak times.
The BalatonEats verdict
Hableány is not a hidden gem but one of Badacsony’s deliberately developed leading attractions. Prices are above average and a 12.5% service charge is added to the bill, but such a complete package is rare: a historic setting, modern bistro cooking, its own winery, a good terrace and a central location requiring no special detour. We most recommend it to anyone wanting to understand contemporary, wine-focused Badacsony in a single stop.

Local tip
Book an experience, not just a table
If time permits, pre-book a winery tour and wine tasting alongside lunch. This brings together the story behind the tanks visible from the dining area.
