Opposite Szántód railway station and near the public beach, a tiny stop with red steps welcomes cyclists, beachgoers and walkers with dogs. Launched in spring 2026, this mother-and-daughter family project brought the tradition of Monarchia Rétesház to Balaton’s southern shore.
The star is strudel, hand-stretched, filled on site and freshly baked. Alongside classic apple, curd-cheese and poppy-seed fillings, more unusual combinations may appear, and the selection changes through the day to keep everything fresh. Homemade savoury scones, crescent biscuits, Linzer biscuits and other small pastries may also be on the counter.
Specialty coffee, homemade cordials, lemonade and chilled refreshments accompany the pastries; vegan and gluten-free frozen treats are also offered. This is not a restaurant for lingering over a long meal but an appealing quick rest stop, where a good espresso and warm strudel are reason enough to pause.
The dog-friendly approach is more than a label: water and food bowls, treats, and nearby green space and waterfront make the stop comfortable for four-legged guests too. You barely need to leave the Balaton cycle route.
Operation is seasonal, and the daily selection and hours may change. Check Szántódi Megálló’s Instagram or Facebook page before setting out.
