Villa Kabala

A Michelin Green Star destination above Szigliget: its own garden, family-sourced ingredients, homemade bread and fermented drinks, Balaton views and a structured, thoughtfully developed menu.

The BalatonEats pick A Szigliget villa where the panorama is only the beginning—everything from the garden to the ceramics has its own story.
On Szigliget's Kamonkő hillside, garden, kitchen, bakery and ceramics belong to the same story.
Choose it ifA special occasion, a culinary weekend for two, lunch with views or a thoughtfully planned tasting menu.
Not for you ifIf you seek a quick, informal dinner, children's menu or dishes that can be freely altered on arrival.
Best time to goFriday–Sunday lunch at 12:30 for the panorama; arrive at 18:30 for dinner.

Villa Kabala is not a ‘let’s drop somewhere for dinner’ kind of place. The old villa on the side of Kamonkő combines a six-room guesthouse, restaurant with views, its own garden, bakery, coffee roastery and ceramics workshop. Come prepared for the meal itself to be the activity.

The view makes a strong opening, but it is not what holds the place together. Szabó András’s cooking is ingredient-led, and the menu follows what is available in the villa’s year-round vegetable garden, family farm or from nearby producers. Bread is made on site, the drinks include house-fermented creations, and some plates come to the table from the villa’s workshop.

Lunch or dinner?

At lunchtime, choose a three-course menu from the daily blackboard selection. This is the lighter, freer introduction to Kabala: not a brief experience, but it leaves room for the rest of the day, a walk in Szigliget or the castle.

There is no browsing a menu at dinner: the six-course set menu starts at exactly 19:00, with arrival requested between 18:30 and 18:45. This is a full-evening experience, with optional alcoholic or non-alcoholic pairing or a separate Balaton Uplands wine flight.

What makes it a Michelin Green Star restaurant?

Sustainability here is not a separate chapter on the website. The kitchen uses its own garden, local and family ingredients; bakes bread, ferments drinks, roasts coffee and makes ceramics on site. The Michelin Guide first recommended it in 2022, then recognised this approach with a Green Star in 2023. It remains part of the guide’s Hungarian Green Star community.

What should you expect on the plate?

There is no permanent list of favourites because the selection keeps changing. The style is close to nature, skilful and playful: a vegetable can take the lead as readily as meat, and decoration is often an edible part of the idea. The uploaded photographs show its two poles well: rustic bread, cheeses and house-made bites on one side; delicately composed, almost graphic plates on the other.

How much does it cost?

The three-course lunch menu is HUF 15,490 per person; a three-drink alcoholic or non-alcoholic pairing is HUF 6,490. The six-course dinner is HUF 27,990, with drink pairing at HUF 12,490 or a six-wine Balaton Uplands flight at HUF 15,490. A 14 per cent service charge is added to listed prices.

Children, dogs and dietary needs

There is no children’s menu, and the venue recommends dinner for ages 12 and over. Vegetarian and vegan guests are welcome, and most allergies and intolerances can be accommodated, but these must be mentioned when booking: the menu cannot be redesigned on arrival. According to the Michelin Guide’s current listing, the restaurant does not accept dogs.

Useful to know ahead

Table reservations are effectively mandatory—even for overnight guests. For six people or more, half the menu price is requested in advance. Public guest reviews repeatedly highlight the staff’s approachability, the panorama, house drinks and the menu’s consistent quality. The compromise is time and structure: no late drop-ins at dinner, no separate children’s menu and no last-minute dietary requests.

Villa Kabala does not rely on one permanent dish: the full menu reveals its thinking built around the garden, family products and seasons.

Local tip

Visit for lunch first

For a first visit, the three-course lunch is the better introduction: the same culinary approach, more choice and a panorama enjoyed in daylight.

The BalatonEats meal plan

How to put your meal together

  1. 01
    Homemade bread and house-made bites

From the first course, notice how the bakery, garden, fermentation and family ingredients connect.

  2. 02
The rhythm of the whole menu

Do not look for a single plate: Kabala's strength lies in the sequence of vegetable and meat dishes, textures and the season's progression.

  3. 03
    Non-alcoholic pairing

Not a secondary solution, but an interesting choice in its own right thanks to the house-fermented drinks.

What guests say

What stays with guests?

The strongest common theme in public reviews is the staff: friendly, knowledgeable and approachable service, in Hungarian and other languages alike. The panorama, house drinks and consistently good menu are mentioned just as often. The venue is less suited to anyone wanting a spontaneous, quick or freely customisable meal.
