Kalóz operates directly beneath the trees of Fövenyes beach and was among the first to rethink the Balaton beach snack-bar genre. It is both a relaxed waterfront stop and a serious bistro: flip-flops feel perfectly natural, but the plates feature local ingredients, original recipes and genuine culinary thought.
The beach dish that created a new category
Nagy Attila and Golyán Nikolett began steadily shaping today’s Kalóz in 2015. Its Harcsa&Krumpli, made with European catfish, won Balaton Beach Dish of the Year that same year. The dish still captures exactly what the venue stands for: Balaton ingredients, an approachable format and careful preparation.
The kitchen did not stop at fish street food. Seasonal soups, homemade pasta, burgers made with Hungarian beef, vegetarian dishes, children’s meals and giant pancakes also appear on the menu. Kalóz’s ‘main-course soup’, with spiced broth, meats, noodles and crisp vegetables, works as a meal in its own right.
Beach Borbár beneath the trees
The separate drinks counter is far more than an obligatory supporting player. Wines from Balaton wineries, sparkling wines, craft beers, Kalóz’s own wines and homemade cordials form the core of its selection. A late lunch can therefore easily stretch into drinks before sunset.
In summer the atmosphere is lively, family-oriented and unmistakably beachy. Thanks to its covered, winter-ready section, however, Kalóz has also opened on weekends and during major school breaks in the colder months since 2020. The shore then reveals a quieter, more intimate side.
What should you order?
On a first visit, Harcsa&Krumpli is the reliable introduction: European catfish fillet, fried potatoes and two homemade sauces. If it is on the current board, fermented-cucumber soup or another seasonal soup makes a good counterpoint. Finish with a giant pancake or a glass of Balaton wine.
Who is it for — and who might prefer somewhere else?
Kalóz is a good choice for a family beach day, lunch with friends, a cycling stop or a food-focused outing where being directly beside the lake matters more than formal service. Vegetarian options are available, while children benefit from their own selection and the nearby beach.
In high season, account for the beach admission system and lunchtime queues. Prices are higher than at a traditional snack bar because you are getting bistro dishes based on local ingredients and the kitchen’s own work, rather than simple fast food.
Getting here and opening hours
Kalóz is within Fövenyesi Strand, at Strand utca 1; the car park beside the beach is free. Official information states daily opening from 9:00 to 22:00 from early June to early September, and usually Friday to Sunday from 12:00 to 21:00 during the rest of the year. School breaks and long weekends may bring different, extended hours, so check the latest Facebook post before setting out.

Local tip
Avoid peak times in high season
The bistro is inside Fövenyes beach. Check admission conditions in advance during summer and expect a lunchtime queue; late afternoon is calmer, with lovelier light too.
