Cool Café has been open in Fonyód since 2016, next to Dísz tér at Ady Endre utca 5. Get off the train, walk a few minutes, and you’re already sitting with a cappuccino. It’s the kind of café where you pop in for a coffee and it turns into a slow breakfast. And it’s open in winter too, which in Fonyód is no small thing.

Breakfast, coffee, cake

Breakfast is its strength: fried eggs, omelettes, French toast, toasts and sandwiches. Lately guests praise the Croque Madame most. At midday the bruschetta, toasties, wraps or quesadillas come in handy; in 2019 the pulled pork tortilla was the big favourite. The coffee is classic Italian style, and the cappuccino gets most of the good reviews.

Check the cake counter in the afternoon. The Rákóczi túrós (quark and meringue slice) and a Kinder Bueno cake used to be popular on their own, but the selection changes, so ask. In winter there’s mulled wine, punch and hot chocolate. When we checked, a simple breakfast came to 2,000–4,000 HUF, a heartier brunch around 4,000–6,000 HUF.

The place

Inside it’s a bright, plant-filled space with big windows, outside a terrace facing the square. It isn’t a lakeside café; the feel is urban: you watch Fonyód going about its day. Dogs are welcome, and according to an earlier report there was a kids’ corner too.

Good to know

Closed on Mondays, and on Sundays only open until 14:00. Freshly made breakfasts take a little while, so if you’re catching a train, say so when you order. Free-from desserts aren’t always available; with a serious food allergy, ask first.

Who it’s for

Anyone arriving by train, or who simply wants to start the day in Fonyód with a good breakfast, summer or winter. Go elsewhere for a view; come here for a coffee and a Croque Madame.

After the train, before sightseeing

If you're arriving by train, make this your first stop for a cappuccino and a Croque Madame. Come back to the cake counter in the afternoon: if there's Rákóczi túrós, don't miss it.
